Purpose. To analyze the current state and trends in the development of sport fishing in the Dnipropetrovsk region as a component of recreational fishing.

Methodology. The data on the development and current state of sport fishing in the Dnipropetrovsk region were collected as a result of long-term studies and observations (2003–2024). Data collection and processing was based on generally accepted basic methods of recreational fishing research. The information was collected by direct inspection of fisherman’s catches during competitions and questionnaires. Original author’s data and materials of the Federation of Fishing Sports of Ukraine were used. A total of 29 Cups and Championships of the regional and national levels were analyzed. A total of 1068 catches of sport fishermen were studied. The obtained material was analyzed and subjected to statistical processing.

Findings. Sport fishing is an ecologically oriented derivative of recreational fishing with a «Catch & Release» philosophy. The Dnipropetrovsk Regional Federation of Fishing Sports (DFRS) was established in 2007 and today is one of the most powerful fishing and sports organizations in the country, and a leader in fishing sports in Ukraine. The total number of DOFRS members is more than 70, two of whom (O. Zayko and V. Stadnichenko) are among the world’s top 10 best ice jiggers (mormyshka). DOFRS fishermen participate in 11 sport fishing disciplines according to FIPSed rules. In 2007–2023, the DOFRS organized more than 40 competitions at the regional and national levels. According to the analysis of 29 sports competitions in the region, the largest average catches are recorded for boat spinning competitions (Ukrainian Championship on Kamianske Reservoir) and feeder fishing (Dnipropetrovsk Region Cup on the Orilska Dam, Kamianske Reservoir). A promising area for the development of sport fishing in the Dnipro region could be the resumption of casting competitions – casting for distance and accuracy with a weight of 7.5 g / 18 g. In Ukraine, it is necessary to introduce the practice of “professional sport fishermen” – experts.

Originality. For the first time, the article summarizes scientific data on the study of sport fishing in the Dnipropetrovsk region for 2003–2024.

Practical Value. Studies on sport fishing in Ukraine is of great practical importance, in particular, it can be used by experts to assess the ecosystem services of Ukrainian water bodies, to make decisions on investments in the fisheries industry, further fisheries management, and to develop recreational tourism in Ukraine in the post-war period.
